ANALYSIS
CONTEXT:
This photo here was published in the LIFE magazine by the great photographer Gjon mili. Many people confuse this photo and give credit to Picasso because he is the one in the photo drawing with the light but this photos actually belonged to Gjon mili's drawing with light series of 1949. The photo is called “Pablo Picasso drew a centaur in the air with light, 1949.” The idea of drawing with light came up when Picasso (The famous spanish artist) and Gjon mili (a photographer that worked with after images and light ) met in france. Gjon mili showed Picasso some of his photos of some ice skaters that had lights on their shoes which caused a stream of light to show up in the images that mili had taken, after seeing this Picasso had a brilliant idea for a photoshoot with mili which resulted to this and all the other photos of light drawings. Picasso drew bulls , flower vases , centaurs , minotaur's (which have been seen in many of his works like in his art works) and ancient greek figures and creatures from greek mythology and history. Pablo had a big obsession with the minotaur because he through he had loads in common with that overly masculine and strong beast. The story of how the minotaur was slain is actually quite metaphorical in itself, when Theseus went to kill the minotaur he had to go through a maze first which is like he was going deep inside himself (digging deep into himself) and when he finally found the minotaur the minotaur was a masculine beast with great sexual desires and was full of anger. But the minotaur was not real (in the story he is presented as an actual beast that Theseus slayed but no beast such as the minotaur actually existed) the minotaur actually a metaphor to a mans worst qualities and sins (having too much lust for women , being overly violent , greed and all sorts of bad things so when Theseus killed the minotaur he basically killed off the part of himself that was represented by the minotaur (he killed his animal like instincts). So the minotaur wasn't really an actual beast but it was made into a physical beast in the myth to show how horrible a man that could not control his animalistic tendencies and sins could become. I'm not sure if this is why Picasso liked the minotaur so much but in many of his drawings that included a minotaur he also included a naked woman which references the minotaur's story in the myth so I believe Picasso liked the idea of a beast that represented the qualities of a very unfiltered and primal man. Although I just gave a very metaphorical reason Picasso also like the Minotaur because he was half Bull and he really enjoyed Bullfighting since he was from Spain where Bullfighting originated from.
CONTENT:
It's a photo of Pablo Picasso drawing a centaur using a small electric light in a darkened room which looks like it's Picasso’s art station (as we can see from all the painted plates and vases on the walls and floors.) It's a very endearing photo to me because picasso is wearing sandals shorts and no shirt he's just at the comfort of his home making art and in this photo him and his home are literally part of the art that he is creating which makes these artistic photos very lively and just shows us a side of Picasso’s personal life while also showing us beautiful drawings that no one ever saw in real life in the form of a photo. It's almost metaphorical even, it's like those moments in life that can never be completely captured even if you draw them or take a photo or even a video of those moments you can't ever capture them unless you experience them yourself.
COMPOSITION:
Gjon Mili took these photographs with Picasso and his drawing as the central focal point in a darkened room, using two cameras, one for side view, another for front view. By leaving the shutters open, he caught the light streaks and beams as Picasso drew his images. Gjon used an ISO of 400 with an auto white balance so that the light parts would shine but the shadows would make figures and silhouettes (the shapes of the vases on the floor and the texture of the wall make interesting shapes just like in Picasso's paintings which gives the photo an abstract element even if it was unintentional) He used a tripod so that the the only moving things that were captured were Picasso and the light.
CONNECTION:
I Like the idea of drawing with light it seems like a really fun concept you can experiment with but this photo isn't really in my taste and style if I were to make a light photograph I would explore more with the editing (even though Gjon mili couldn't edit as much as I can now I think his other works are better) I'm going to take the idea of drawing with light but I'm going to shoot it in a really dark room so that you cannot see the person drawing with the light in the photo.

I chose Eric stallers photography because I really like how he doesn't just take photos of light there's also a background it's not just a black canvas. I also like how it somehow has a bit of a retro vibe which is what I like as you can see in a lot of my research I use retro vibe type of stuff.

BEFORE AFTER
EVALUATION
Through this project my initial thought was that I found light photography actually a little bit boring since its just a bunch of lines nothing much that interested me but after playing around with it and exploring editing it I found this very interesting and kind of scribbly child drawing looking style that I really like, its very loose and free it almost reminds me of the OK COMPUTER album cover by Radiohead and the image itself looks like a Pink Floyd song if the sound was an image.
To be fairly honest the video I used only helped me a tiny bit since I only used it for the start to change the photos exposure and colour a bit but the rest with the light drawing was all from the dome (I used other edits I have made and past experience with photoshop to just come up with something that looks cool and in my opinion doing that gives me loads of creative freedom and independence because I'm not just copying someone else's photo it gives the image that free feeling I was talking about.
What I found the hardest in this project was my analysis since I didn't have much to talk about because it was such a straight forward photo but then I realized that even if I didn't have much to say about how the photo was made I could really talk about how the photo and the idea even came to be.
I'm actually pretty happy with my results I really like what I have produced today. I haven't edited in a long time so this really boosted my confidence in my capabilities.
